A QR code (short for Quick Response) is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, website address, smartphone app or other data.

Sometimes it’s just easier to explain with examples:

When Paddy Power launched their smartphone app, they placed a QR Code beside all their print ads. By simply scanning the QR Code, it opened up the app on your phone which you could then download.
