In early 2009, Cora Concannon asked her husband and businessman, Oisin Concannon to use a non-toxic weedkiller get rid of the weeds around their house as they wanted to ensure their children and pets would not be at risk from any of the harmful chemicals present in synthetic weedkillers. Unfortunately Oisin could not locate a 100% natural weedkiller in the Irish marketplace and set about developing a natural, Irish made alternative to chemical weedkillers.  

Oisin set about trying to kill the weeds using vinegar and then other natural substances including acetic acid but all to no avail. Although he had identified the natural ingredients he needed to develop his natural weedkiller, Oisin had to develop a process to make them all work together effectively. Subsequently, Oisin spent months in R&D and vigorous product testing in OECD* accredited laboratories in Europe. Following on from this process, the innovative Irish Organic Weedkiller (IOW) was born. Irish Organic Weedkiller is now the only Irish company licensed to manufacture and market a 100% natural weedkiller in Ireland and holds licenses to develop 13 natural weed killer products.    

Irish Organic Weedkiller contains only natural ingredients, starts to work within 3 hours and is 100% bio-degradable.  Extremely fast acting, the product returns the PH of the soil to normal after two days for quick replanting.  A safe and environmentally friendly alternative to non green weedkillers, this new product leaves no harmful chemicals behind.  As an added benefit, the dying root of the weed acts as a wholly natural compost, enriching and nourishing the soil.

Feedback from product trials has been excellent, with the product works quicker and more effectively than market leading synthetic weedkillers. Also the product’s performance, safety and ease of use, will appeal to farmers and to local authorities for use in public amenity areas.  

The product was recently shortlisted for the Best New Green Product Award at The Irish Green Awards 2010. The Awards are designed to commend eco-friendly products proven to be as effective as non-green traditional products.  

Irish Organic Weedkiller is available throughout leading Garden Centres and hardware stores across the country, the UK and will be launched in eight countries in February, 2011.
