7 business uses for the ipad

Written by Johnny Beirne

I bought an iPad last Christmas because I convinced myself that I needed one for my business. Since then I have made sure I use it in my business to justify the purchase and cover up why I really bought it. Here is a list of ways and apps I use that helps me be more efficient and effective in my daily work, primarily when I’m out and about. Of course I have twice as many apps for personal use including games for the children. Before I start the list I have to mention the fact that the iPad does not have to be booted up like a laptop. It’s always on like a phone (once it’s charged of course). This is a great time saving feature when out and about.

1.       Email

The email client is quick and simple and you are more likely to write a more satisfactory response than replying from your phone i.e. the screen size and large on screen keyboard makes it feel a lot more like a laptop.

2.       Dropbox

Dropbox is a great online backup service and they have a good app for accessing files when out of the office. Of course there are lots of remote access apps where you can see the office computer/laptop through the iPad but most of the time I just want the files.

3.       Displaying your wears

This is a use not an app. What I mean by this is iBooks which comes with the iPad allows you to store PDF documents in a library and then use the iPad as a digital brochure/catalog.  You can also demo videos, graphics and photographs and there is no comparison versus print. Of course with its built in Wi-Fi & 3G option you can also display websites too.

4.       Penultimate

This app is useful if you need to take quick notes and can’t type fast enough. i.e. use your finger as a pencil.

5.       Feeddler

Feeddler is a great app for accessing Google Reader. I have even bought the Pro version.

6.       Mindnode

Mindnode is useful for recording quick mind maps

7.       Fast access to information

Again, because you don’t have to wait for the iPad to boot you are more likely to pick it up and read updates on Twitter, Feeddler, News etc. While I’m not suggesting you never leave it down, I do find that I am keep more up to date because of the iPad.

In summary, your business will not close if you don’t have an iPad and it is somewhat of a luxury item. However, in my experience you can impress clients when using it to display what you sell and with the 1000’s of business apps I am sure with a little discipline it will pay for itself and more.
