Social Media: Small Businesses Getting the Big Picture

Date added: July 28th, 2011  |

We’re all aware of how social media is exerting more and more influence on how businesses and brands communicate with customers and consumers alike. One of the most celebrated  business users of social media has been US electronics retailer Best Buy’s Twelpforce, a super-quick response customer service centre done through Twitter. Great ideas like this, though, don’t have to be big businesses or global brands: small Irish businesses can start fully exploiting social media.

And that’s exactly what’s starting to happen now: small businesses have begun to talk to each other about social media. It started a short while ago when the people behind the small business blog FocuSME Magazine and software developers Tús Nua Designs got together to get #SMEcommunity trending on Twitter. The aim was to get noticed and get small businesses meeting up in different parts of the country to discuss the most important  issues for SMEs through the use of social media.

And it’s been an unqualified success so far! #SMEcommunity became the number one trending topic in Ireland within a few hours of its ‘launch’. It’s not just about meeting up in the real world, though: sharing relevant business news and social media tips online have both been core parts of the #SMEcommunity Twitter community. Seeing small indigenous business take to social media in an innovative and collaborative way is wonderful.

The sun was shining on Thursday when over 150 women gathered at the stunning Carton House to hear three inspirational women – Norah Casey, Joan Burton and Terry McDermot – speak at the Women in Business Enterprise Week event.

The numbers of women working and leading in business and politics have shown incremental growth in the last decade. Minister Burton was quick to point out that there are far more women in business than in politics in Ireland but that she was ‘working on it!’

Minister Burton commented that women have a tremendous capacity for working and supporting each other in business and that is why women’s only events are so important. She also spoke of the recently announced Jobs Initiative and the importance of encouraging internships in all areas of business.
