Social Media: Small Businesses Getting the Big Picture

Date added: July 28th, 2011  |

We’re all aware of how social media is exerting more and more influence on how businesses and brands communicate with customers and consumers alike. One of the most celebrated  business users of social media has been US electronics retailer Best Buy’s Twelpforce, a super-quick response customer service centre done through Twitter. Great ideas like this, though, don’t have to be big businesses or global brands: small Irish businesses can start fully exploiting social media.

And that’s exactly what’s starting to happen now: small businesses have begun to talk to each other about social media. It started a short while ago when the people behind the small business blog FocuSME Magazine and software developers Tús Nua Designs got together to get #SMEcommunity trending on Twitter. The aim was to get noticed and get small businesses meeting up in different parts of the country to discuss the most important  issues for SMEs through the use of social media.

And it’s been an unqualified success so far! #SMEcommunity became the number one trending topic in Ireland within a few hours of its ‘launch’. It’s not just about meeting up in the real world, though: sharing relevant business news and social media tips online have both been core parts of the #SMEcommunity Twitter community. Seeing small indigenous business take to social media in an innovative and collaborative way is wonderful.

Will Irish SMEs add ‘Foursquare’ to their marketing toolkit?

Foursquare, a location based social network that incorporates gaming elements, is planning to distribute a free analytics tool, which will give business owners access to a range of information about visitors to their premises.

With the new analytics dashboard, businesses will be able to see a range of real-time data about Foursquare usage, including who has “checked in” to their place via Foursquare, when they arrived, the male-to-female customer ratio and which times of day are more active for certain customers.

According to the New York Times, a test customer, P.C.C. Natural Markets, a Seattle-based organic foods company, saw a large number of new Foursquare users coming to its stores over the weekend and used the analytics tool to figure out where they were coming from.

“By using the Foursquare dashboard, we figured out that they were coming for a new organic doughnut that had been advertised on TV,” said Ricardo Rabago, social media specialist for the company.
